A 58-year-old Valley City man was killed after a rock went through the windshield of the car he was driving on State Highway 1 on May 25, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said in a press release Friday.

Shortly after 8 a.m., a 2019 Dodge Ram driven by Marlin Kiser was traveling southbound on Highway 1 in LaMoure, and a 1999 Kenworth semi-truck with a belly dump trailer was traveling northbound.

As the vehicles neared each other, the belly dump trailer mistakenly released its load of rock onto the roadway. A loose rock from this load struck the windshield of the Dodge, passing through the windshield and striking Kiser.

Kiser was treated by Oakes and LaMoure Ambulance Services on scene and then transported to Oakes Hospital. Kiser died from his injuries at Oakes Hospital.

A passenger in the Dodge Ram, Gary Engstrom of Leeds, was uninjured.

The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
