ANDOVER - A five-year-old was hit and killed by a tractor-trailer near the intersection of Elm and Main streets in Andover on Tuesday afternoon.
The truck driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.
State Police say the child was with a group at the time of the incident. Other people who were not hit by the truck were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
"I just heard some yelling and screaming," a man said. "She was frantic. I can't even imagine what she was going through, how she was feeling."
As investigators carefully reconstructed how this could have happened, Andover neighbors felt sickened for a stranger's worst nightmare come true.
"I think it's horrific," a woman said. "It's absolutely very sad. I can't imagine the family, or even the people involved in the accident."
Police didn't say anything more about the group with whom the child had been crossing. State and local police remained in Elm Square for hours.
