An 18-wheeler crashed into a dump truck on Interstate 35, spilling thousands of pounds of onions and shutting down the highway early Friday morning, according to San Antonio police.
The crash happened around 2:15 a.m. on I-35 northbound near O’Connor Road. The highway is presently shutdown. SAPD says to avoid the area.
According to police, the 18-wheeler was carrying roughly 80,000 pounds of onions when it rear-ended a dump truck at a high-rate of speed.

The driver of the dump truck was taken to an area hospital as a precaution, while the driver of the 18-wheeler was not hurt.
Police say they now expect a lengthy cleanup process that involves first unloading the onions and then detaching the trailer from the big rig. They will then haul both pieces out of the area. Following the removal of the big rig, a clean up of the oil and debris from the roadway would then still have to be done, police said.
The cleanup is expected to take several hours.
Traffic is already seen starting to back up in the area. SAPD advices using an alternate route.
