ANDERSON, Ind. — What was originally called a fatal crash on I-69 near Anderson on Friday is now described as a crash that injured two people.

State authorities initially said the crash was deadly. Hours later, the Madison County Sheriff's Department provided an update stating that the only two people involved in the crash — the driver of a dump truck and the driver of a semi — suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The Indiana Department of Transportation said the crash happened at about 11 a.m. in the southbound lanes from Markelville Road to Rangeline Road (mile marker 227.8 to 227.6), about one mile north of Anderson.

At about 1:45 p.m., MCSD said "all southbound lanes are closed and anticipated to be so for several hours."

The sheriff's department released the following explanation of the crash:

"A 2008 Mack dump truck pulling a flatbed trailer operated by an Indianapolis man was traveling northbound I-69 at the 227.6 mile marker. The dump truck veered off the left side of the roadway where it crossed the median and over the barrier cable becoming airborne. The dump truck entered northbound traffic where it struck a southbound semi-truck with trailer containing frozen food operated by a Abilene, Texas man. The dump truck came to rest on its side blocking both lanes of southbound traffic. The semi was pushed off the right side of the roadway from the collision coming to rest on its side in a field."

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
