TULSA, Okla. — A Sand Springs woman had a close call after debris flew off a dump truck on I-244, smashing her windshield.
Edan Cole was driving along I-244 near the Yale exit on Wednesday when it happened.
"I was three car lengths away from a waste management vehicle and they didn't have anything covering their pile of belongings in their truck and so a piece of wood about four foot, five foot long, two inches, three inches thick had flown out and hit through my windshield," Cole said.
Cole wasn't hurt, but her seat and her face were covered with shattered glass.
Cole said she's grateful that her two kids weren't in the car with her.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said they see these types of crashes every day.
Trooper Cody Willis works with the troop that cleans up that debris off the highways.
"Any vehicle that's moving on the highway, that has a load, it has to be secured from falling off or blowing out or causing some type of a hazard on the highway. So, whether it's a normal truck and trailer that somebody is carrying that looks like a lawn mower, you know, it has to be secured. If it's a dump truck hauling a bunch of gravel, that gravel has to be secured in there with a tarp."
If those loads aren't secured, they’ll be cited.
Willis said drivers should keep a safe distance and watch out for loads falling of trucks. They should also watch out for the troopers cleaning them up.
We reached out to the manager of waste management today to get the company's side of the story, but our call was not returned.
Cole said the driver did not stop to help her and she reported it to OHP.
