NEW BRUNSWICK – A shipping terminal, which would operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, may be coming to Jersey Avenue.
The Planning Board has scheduled a public hearing April 10 on a proposal by Amar US Holdings to operate a transportation facility and terminal at 703-711 Jersey Ave. in a general industrial zone.
Amar US Holdings is seeking a bulk variance for the proposed building on the site to be raised, due to flood hazard requirements that will not allow for plantings along the perimeter. In addition, a stream along the parking area will not allow for a landscaped buffer between the parking area and the abutting property lines, according to documents filed with the city.

The plan calls for containers picked up from a port to be transported by trailer to the storage areas on site, stacked four containers high to a maximum of 38 feet, where each container will remain until discharged and taken to a warehouse, the documents say. Empty containers stored on site would await new shipping assignments.
Three shifts of employees would work all day, every day to document the receipt and discharge of containers, tailers and communications, regulate traffic entering and leaving the site and make sure the site is secure. A security fence and surveillance cameras from a 320-square-foot building and lights are planned to safeguard the entire facility, according to the documents.
